The Towanda Black Knights took the long road trip to Pius X and came up short in a 34-7 loss on Saturday afternoon.

"They were very athletic, they matched us very well with speed," Towanda coach Jamie Wecker said. "They were physical and we just had a hard time moving the ball on the. They were much more athletic then we knew, sometimes you just can't tell everything on film.

"Our kids worked hard, they fought, we just ran into a team that was good."

It was the defense that got Pius X started as Eric Marbury intercepted a pass and ran it back 56 yards for a first-quarter touchdown. The kick failed and it was 6-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter T.J. Belle hauled in a 10-yard pass from Nick Brotzman and Brotzman hit Nate Stewart on a two-point pass to make it 14-0 at the half.

In the third Stewart caught a 25-yard touchdown from Brotzman and Nate Winchilla hit the extra point to make it 21-0 entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth Dashon Russell scored on a four-yard run for Pius and the kick failed and it was 27-0.

Towanda got on the board as Noah Wheeler hauled in a 61-yard touchdown from Brandon McLinko. Tyler Basse hit the extra point to make it a 27-7 game.

Eric Marbury scored on a one-yard run and Winchilla hit the extra point to cap the scoring for Pius X.

"Both sides of the ball we could have done a better job," Wecker said. "But, the kids hung tough. It was a pretty close game until they scored int he middle of the fourth quarter to go up 24-0. Then we got some younger kids some experience and they came in and scored.

"We went down and I thought our kids put fourth a good effort, it wasn't like we rolled over on them. We just ran into a team that had answers for us and honestly I think outmatched us in some ways. I was proud of the kids efforts, there are things we need to improve on, but I liked their effort."

Brotzman was 15-for-17 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Russell had 12 carries for 94 yards for Pius and he had six grabs for 77 yards, while Marbury had five grabs for 64 yards and Stewart and Eric Provosty had four catches each.

It was the 600th game in Pius X history and their 350th win.

Russell was named the Knights of Columbus MVP for Pius X and Noah Huff was the MVP for Towanda.
